margaret howell via creatures of comfort / diy project

I know the Margaret Howell lookbook for the newest collection has already saturated tumblrs and blogs (see a few posts below...) but I instantly fell in love with these two button ups from Creatures of Comfort and couldn't help but think of how perfect they would be for summer. I'm hoping to maybe do my own DIY version of them this weekend with maybe a little boys oxford shirt. Cutting off and tacking the sleeves seems like it would be easy enough! And a lot more affordable. I'll let you know how it turns out!

lately i've found myself a little lacking in the blogging post idea department, i'm so fixated/excited/etc on my upcoming trips and move to austin (only a few months now!) that i haven't really been able to think about much else. later this month i'm heading to boston + nyc and will (hopefully) have some more original content of my own if i can remember to snap a few shots of my trip. for now, some summer fashion from maryam nassir zadeh's online shop.

vacation inspiration

After a gloomy few months, I'm nothing short of stoked to pack up a suitcase and spend a little time in warmer climates with family and do all the hiking and swimming I can pack in to a few short days before I head back to Boston to finish up my degree.  I'm not entirely sure how many rolls of film would constitute as excessive, but I can't help but feel that the love of my life (Ae-1) and my girl on the side (Holga) are hungry for adventure and I don't want to disappoint!

artist interview: gabriela nicole gonzalez

Our newest artist interview is with illustrator Gabriela Nicole Gonzalez, a recent graduate from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Gabriela's style is a mix of whimsically delightful, colorful and fun. You can find more of her work on her website and blog.

Can you give us a little background about yourself and your work?

Hi! I’m Gabriela Nicole Gonzalez and I’m and illustrator. I graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art and I really enjoy playful, quirky illustration particularly but not limited to for children. I use bright colors in my pieces and generally aim to make people smile. I work with several different mediums and take pleasure in experimenting however most of my work is done digitally and in paper collage.

What type of things (artists, films, fashion, real life) inspire you?

I am really inspired by artists such as Micah Lidberg, Siggi Eggertsson and Merjin Hos. I think the work of all three of them is really playful and they make me happy. I would have to say though that my main inspiration for many of my works is from traveling and visiting different cities and meeting new people. I have a few projects that were entirely influenced by particular trips where I was blown away by the imagery (Greece) or from people from other cultures I met whilst on a trip (Mexico).

Do you have a narrative in mind when you create a piece? Or do you draw what comes to mind?

Usually I will have an idea that I’ve written in my journal or sketchbook and it lingers there for a while until I’ve figured out how would be the best way to execute it. But of course I also like to doodle from my head from time to time…
Also, I like to write. Currently I’m working on a children’s book in which the writing came first and then the illustrations. It’s a short poem about a village that tickles the moon with a giant feather causing it to fall down, and they have to figure a way to return it to the sky.

What direction do you see your work going in the future? and do you have any upcoming projects planned?

I would like to work on more children’s books in the future but really I think I would take part in any kind of project that is for children. I am going on a trip back to Europe in June though where I fully intend to take in what I see and use it to create some new work.

Any advice to anyone just getting into illustration and drawing on how to develop their own personal style?

I think it is really important to explore different mediums and experiment with several styles until you’ve stumbled upon something that is uniquely yours, and that you enjoy doing. I would also suggest to always look at the work of others, read a lot of blogs, ask for the help of your friends and family, travel, and just always fill your head with new things that could potentially bring you to new ideas.

Hello, my name is Tricia and instead of getting rid of things for a cross country move like I'm supposed to, I acquire them. In my defense, I love each and every recent purchase and kinda need some of them (like my new glasses.)

I had been wanting a red, white, and blue skirt for a while (more sixties school girl than USA #1), and when I saw this one Morgan made, I knew I couldn't do better. Floral stripes? Yes, please. Fortunately, Morgan was up for a swap, and now it's mine! I love the way it goes with this blouse I picked up for a dollar a couple weeks a go. Pattern mixing is my favorite.

She attached some business cards to the package with a tiny clothespin! Too cute.

Mimi Farina's Wedding

I'm not a girl who has been dreaming of her perfect wedding day since my young and impressionable introduction to Disney princesses...but I have to admit, when I first saw a picture of folk goddess Mimi Farina on her wedding day, I became a little obsessed with finding more pictures. Vintage photo addiction is an actual problem some people have, okay? And will you believe that there is absolutely no one in this world working on a cure?

Fortunately, Flickr came to the rescue! So now, in a kind of roundabout way, I'm a girl who has her wedding planned out to the lack of detail - I'm not getting married unless it's hangin' out in the backyard with flowers in my hair! Oh, and Joan Baez should be there, of course!
